Homage paid to road accident victims on ‘World Remembrance Day 2024’ by Padma Shri Dr. B.K.S.Sanjay and his team who had been running road safety campaign since past 25 Years

Under the auspices of Sanjay Orthopaedic, Spine, and Maternity Centre and Seva Society, the World Remembrance Day 2024 for road accident victims was organized at Doon Vihar, Jakhan, Rajpur Road, Dehradun, as part of an annual tradition. The event aimed to remember all those who have died or been seriously injured in road accidents and to provide a platform for road traffic victims and their families.
Padma Shri Dr. B. K. S. Sanjay and his team have been running a road safety campaign for nearly 25 years. They continuously raise awareness about the harmful consequences of road accidents through educational and social institutions across the state and country. As part of this initiative, a memorial service was held for the victims of a bus accident in Marchula and a car accident in Dehradun.
Senior orthopaedic surgeon Padma Shri Dr. Sanjay shared that approximately five lakh accidents occur every year in our country, resulting in around 1.5 lakh deaths and an equal number of people becoming permanently or temporarily disabled despite receiving proper medical treatment. These victims continue to suffer the consequences of road accidents throughout their lives. Dr. Sanjay identified the main causes of accidents as overloading, over speeding, and overtaking. Additionally, lack of sleep, the influence of alcohol, fatigue, and the use of mobile phones while driving worsen the situation.
The event’s chief guest, former High Court Justice Mr. Rajesh Tandon (retd), advised everyone to follow traffic rules as adhering to the law can help prevent accidents. He also suggested that meditation could be an effective measure to reduce accidents and encouraged Dr. Sanjay to conduct meditation programs.
Prof. Vishal Sagar mentioned that social media has become a major distraction, altering the very definition of society. He urged everyone to understand their social responsibilities and channel their energy in meaningful ways.
Pramod Kumar, SP City, Dehradun, emphasized that preventing road accidents is not just the police’s responsibility, but a shared duty among all. He urged everyone to stay away from alcohol and follow traffic rules. Dr. Ashwini Kamboj expressed concern about the rising competition among youth to overspeed and stressed the need to curb this behaviour.
Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Praveen Mittal stated that since Dehradun has many educational institutions and a large youth population, it is crucial that young people do not drive under the influence of alcohol. Such habits should be prevented from childhood. Gynaecologist Dr. Sujata Sanjay pointed out that it is very saddening for parents to see such accidents, and while we witness them regularly, we do not learn from them, which is unfortunate.
Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. S. N. Singh noted that no matter how much vehicles improve, unless we improve ourselves, we cannot reduce such accidents. He stressed that everyone should respect the police, parents, and society. Mrs. Jain, President of Doon Vihar Colony, mentioned that road accidents leave an indelible pain, which no one can ever forget. Today’s youth often lose their lives in a moment of competitive recklessness.
Journalist Prakash Singh emphasized the importance of parents guiding their children. Lalit Sharma pointed out that sleep deprivation is one of the major causes of accidents and recommended getting 7-8 hours of sleep for better safety on the roads.
Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Gaurav Sanjay concluded by stating that accidents happen in an instant, and therefore, we all must follow the established rules to prevent such fatal accidents. Dr. Gaurav Sanjay thanked all the distinguished guests, journalists, students, and everyone present at the event. The event was conducted by Yogesh Agarwal and also attended by members of Uttarakhand Ayurvedic Medical Students, r. Sanjay Nautiyal, Paritosh Kimothi, D. V. Singh and Sapna, among others.
