Seventy percent of Greenhouse emissions from cities

Dehradun, September 13

Professor Ofelia Q. F. Araujo from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, said, “Cities are responsible for 70% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions in the world, but at the same time, they also account for 80% of the global GDP. This means we now have to shift from fossil fuels to sustainable energy.”

Addressing an international conference at Graphic Era Deemed University, Professor Ofelia said that today, 59% of the world’s urban population lives in cities with over one million people. In such a situation, adopting clean energy and smart technologies is the only way to secure the future.

In the valedictory session, Vice Chancellor of Graphic Era University Dr. Narpinder Singh said that such sessions play an important role in guiding environmental conservation in the right direction. He said that these discussions give students an understanding of real-world situations and create awareness about how they can bring meaningful change to society and the environment.

Dr. Souvik Das from IIT Delhi spoke about environmental sustainability through electrochemical solutions, explaining how these technologies could prove revolutionary in water purification, biohydrogen production, and soil quality improvement. He said that these solutions will not only reduce pollution but also ensure clean energy and food security, helping India move towards global leadership in sustainable technologies.

This international conference was jointly organized by the Department of Civil Engineering of Graphic Era University and the University of Naples Parthenope, Italy.
