Graphic Era Hospital sets a new milestone with replacement of an elderly woman’s heart valve without surgery
Dehradun, January 22
Specialists at Graphic Era Hospital have successfully replaced a heart valve of a 76-year-old woman without making any surgical incision, in a rare and highly complex case. This is the first such case in Uttarakhand and nearby states, where a patient’s life has been saved by replacing a heart valve using this advanced technique. This achievement marks a major milestone for Graphic Era in the field of medical science.
The case involved a 76-year-old woman from Dehradun, whose heart valve was replaced using the lampoon procedure. She was brought to Graphic Era Hospital after suffering from heart failure. She had severe breathlessness and significant swelling in her legs. In 2014, she had undergone open-heart surgery during which a heart valve was replaced. Nearly 11 years after that surgery, the same valve had deteriorated again about six months ago.
The Head of the Department and heart specialist at Graphic Era Hospital, Dr. Raj Pratap Singh, said that again an open-heart surgery was not possible for the patient. Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement also posed a high risk, as it could have blocked another valve. Therefore, the only option left to save the patient’s life was to use the lampoon procedure, in which the damaged old valve is cut and a new valve is implanted.
The medical team at Graphic Era Hospital followed this approach. First, the old valve was cut to create a pathway, and then a new valve was successfully implanted.
Dr. Raj Pratap Singh further stated that the valve was replaced without any incision, through a vein in the leg. After the procedure, the patient’s condition improved steadily, and she was discharged from the hospital. He added that this is the first such case of valve replacement using this procedure in the region. No similar case has been reported in Uttarakhand or neighboring states, and only a handful of such cases have been performed across the country.
The expert medical team included Director of cardiac Science Dr. Akhilesh Pandey, cardiologists Dr. Himanshu Rana and Dr. Abhishek, along with anaesthesia specialists Dr. S. P. Gautam and Dr. Parag Kumar.
It is noteworthy that specialists at Graphic Era Hospital have earlier achieved several other medical milestones, including repairing a leaking heart valve without surgery using the Teer procedure, treating a rare case of hormonal Cushing’s disease without brain surgery, implanting a third pacemaker in a young child, and opening a blocked food pipe without surgery.
Congratulating the medical team on this remarkable success, Chairman of Graphic Era Group of Institutions, Dr. Kamal Ghanshala, said that with a mission of serving humanity, Graphic Era Hospital is setting new benchmarks in healthcare by adopting cutting-edge global technologies and engaging experienced specialists. He added that state-of-the-art laboratories are strengthening trust in modern medical care.
