Two persons belonging to Birthi region of Pithoragarh forest division have been booked under Wild Life Protection Act, after their video of killing a porcupine near their home went viral on social media.
“After the ‘People for Ethical Treatment of Animals’, (PETA), a Non Government Organisation (NGO), taking cognizance of that video, drew our attention to the killing of rare and threatened animal in Birthi region, we have registered an FIR against two persons identified as Veeru and Govind of the village”, said Aashutosh Singh, District Forest Officer (DFO), Pithoragarh.
According to the information, the culprits killed the animal by making him tired after they ran after him with their vehicle.” We have taken it as cruelty against the wild animals and our investigation in on. After we get complete information required further sections will also be imposed, ” said the DFO.
In another case of violation of Wildlife Protection Act, a person, named Deepak Singh Bora, has been arrested from Bhingrara region of Champawat district after a leopard skin was recovered from his possession.” The culprit has now been arrested under Wild Life Protection Act and has confessed that he had killed the leopard by the way of trapping and then killing it,” said Himalaya Singh Tolia, Range officer of Bhingrara range of Champawat division of forest.
