Road to Munisyari closed following damage to vital bridge in Pithoragarh, schools closed due to warning of heavy rains

The border road from Thal to Munsiyari and onwards to Milam security posts at Indo- China border, was closed cutting off road link to several  villages and Munsiyari town  following washing away of abetment of a bridge at Dwaligar, near Nachni  village, due to heavy rains .

The traffic on the road to Munisiyari town was stopped after damage to the vital bridge.

” The approach abetment of the bridge was washed away in the flash floods damaging the bridge, that links Munsiyari town and 14 villages  of Malla johar (Upper part of Johar valley), with mainstream Thal  town,” said Bhagat Singh Phonia, SDM of Munsiyari.

“We had already stooped plying of heavy vehicle on this road during monsoon as any heavy vehicle stranded on the road blocked traffic for several hours even for small vehicles to ply on this key border town,” said the SDM.

According to District Disaster Management Office, all main rivers  Kali, Saryu and Gori are flowing near the danger levels. ” We have issued warning to the villagers living  near these rivers, not  to visit  the river banks  during monsoon rains,” said M.S. Mahar, District Disaster Management Officer, Pithoragarh.

According to  Pithoragarh District Magistrate Ashish Chauhan, a red alert has been issued for the district as the weather department has forecasted heavy rains in the district  today, along with Dehradun, Tehri, US Nagar, Champawat and Almora districts.” We have today closed the schools and Aganbaris in district following  the warning of heavy rains by weather department, “said the DM.
