Following the upgradation of the Naini-Saini airstrip of Pithoragarh to 2C license, 42 seater aircrafts would be allowed to land, enhancing the possibilities of tourist potential of the district.
“We have received the 2C licence for airport only yesterday. We have upgraded the infrastructure at the airport according to the guidelines of the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). We have developed a 40 meters long strip around the run way and have also widened the airstrip,” said Reena Joshi, District Magistrate, Pithoragarh.
Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has upgraded the licence for the airport only a day before making the airstrip capable to land 42 seater aircrafts.” This upgrading will work as a breakthrough for tourists sector of the district as due to geographical distances tourists used to hesitate to come here, but now they will come and our hitherto virgin tourists places will become popular,” hoped Pawan Joshi, president of Vyapar Sangh and a hotelier in the town.
The airport that was constructed in the year 1991, was initially made suitable to land Fournier 228 type aircrafts mainly for administrative purposes but due to public demands, civilian flights were started in the year 2019, but closed after 3 months due to some technical problem faced by a nine seater aircraft operating on the route. However civilian air services were resumed from February 1, 2024 and a 19 seater aircraft of ‘Fly Big Company’ is operating between Pithoragarh, Dehradun and Pant Nagar airports.
