Uttarakhand prepares for first phase of Lok Sabha polls

Pithoragarh, March 19

A total of 8321207 voters including 4012006 women voters in all five Lok Sabha constituencies of Uttarakhand will cast their vote on April 19, when the the country goes polls in the first phase of general election for 18th Lok Sabha, a  communique released by Uttarakhand Election Commission said.

According to press release, while the highest number of voters are in Dehradun, numbered 1552197, the lowest number of electorates are in Rudra Prayag district where a total of 195563 voters have been listed.

The total number of new voters of 18-19 years of age in the state are 145220, while total number of 85+ age voters are 65177 having highest number in Dehradun, at 5962  and lowest number in Champawat district at  mere 847 voters.

According to the Election Commission, Uttarakhand, in two Lok Sabha seats of Kumaon region, while Nainital – US Nagar seat has a total 2010800 voters, Almora parliamentary seat has a total 1337648 voters.

The voting percentage in the state is gradually increasing from last four Lok Sabha elections but it is still below average national percentage level. “The voting percent in Uttarakhand  in the year 2004 was 49.25 percent when the national average was 58.07 percent, in the general election of 2009, when the voting percentage in Uttarakhand was at 53.96, the national average was 58.21 percent. The voting percentage started increasing from the 2014 general elections when this increased to  62.15 in Uttarakhand while it was at 66.20 percent at the national level. In the general elections of 2019, the voting percentage in the state was 61.50 percent, while it was at 67.40 percent at the national level.
