Uttarakhand Congress could not put up a candidate for the post of chairman and vice chairman of Pithoragarh Zila Panchayat paving the way for ruling Bharatiya Janata Party) BJP candidates to get elected on these posts.

Jitendra Prashad and Deepika Chuphal of BJP are to be declared as Chairman person and vice chairperson of Pithoragarh Zila panchayat respectively as no other person from any party or group filed nomination papers for these posts till the last date of nominations today, as per Dr Yogesh Sharma, assistant returning officer of the district.

“Only two nominations, Jitendra Prashad for the post of chairperson of Zila panchayat and Deepika Chuphal for the post of vice chairperson were received by returning officer till the time of nomination ended today,” said the ARO.

The candidates will be formally declared as winner on August 14th, the day of election for the posts.” said Vinod Goswami, District Magistrate and Returning officer for the posts in Pithoragarh.

When asked why they could not field their candidate to contest the key panchayat post in the district, senior Congress leader Mahendra Singh Lunthi said that, as the post is reserved for scheduled castes, they had only one authorised scheduled caste candidate elected as Zila panchayat member, namely Mamta Chanyal, from Vhitgal seat of Gangolihat but she refused to contest. “The party persuaded her to file nomination papers but she refused citing financial problems,” said Lunthi.

According to Lunthi, though Congress party could not contest the post of Zila panchayat chairperson, it would contest posts of block ‘Pramukhs’ of all 8 blocks of the district. “We are going to win blocks of Munsiyari, Gangolihat, Berinag, Didihat ,Moonakot and Dharchula blocks,.”claimed Lunthi.

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader has written to election officers against BJP block pramukh candidate. He said that the post if reserved for scheduled tribes candidate but the BJP candidate Manjula Devi belongs to upper caste as evident from her background hailing from Nepal. He urged the election officials to take action.
