Road traffic accidents are a major public health concern in Tripura. The incidence of road traffic accidents and related fatalities in the state remains higher than the national average. Padma Shri Prof. Dr. B.K.S. Sanjay highlighted that nearly 90% of road traffic accidents are caused due to driver negligence, with over speeding being a major contributing factor in Tripura as well as across the country.
To spread awareness regarding road safety, Padma Shri Prof. Dr. B.K.S. Sanjay delivered a lecture at Tripura Medical College. The message was well received by medical students and staff. He expressed concern over the increasing number of road accidents in the region, leading to loss of lives and severe impact on families.
The programme was organized under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Arindam Dutta, Principal of Tripura Medical College, along with CEO Mr. Swapna Dutta. It was coordinated by Prof. Pradeep Kumar Das, Head of the Department of Microbiology.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sanjay urged medical students to strictly follow traffic rules. He emphasized the use of helmets while riding two-wheelers and seat belts while driving four-wheelers. He reminded students that they are future nation builders and must promote safe road practices in society.
He further identified drunken driving, fatigue, distraction, and over speeding as major causes of accidents, especially in night travel and hilly regions. He stressed that professional excellence depends not only on competence but also on conduct, discipline, and responsibility toward society.
