SUCI (Communist) strongly condemns fascistic action of suspending 141 MPs, new CEC selection criterion, SC verdict on Article 370
New Delhi, Dec 20
Comrade Provash Ghosh, General Secretary, Socialist Unity Centre of India UCI (Communist), has strongly condemned the draconian order of presiding officers of the both the houses to suspend opposition members. In a statement issued here today, he said “It was legal and legitimate on the part of the opposition MPs to demand a statement of the Union home minister on the floor of the parliament about a recent incident of security lapse in the Lok Sabha on 13 December last. But the BJP government, instead of acceding to their demand answered by suspending 141 MPs of both the houses which is unprecedented not only in our country, but also in other countries too. This only indicates that the BJP government is bent upon subverting even the residual elementary norms of parliamentary democracy in its avid pursuit of firming up a fascist autocratic rule in the country.
“We strongly condemn this most undemocratic action and demand immediate withdrawal of the suspension and a statement from the Union Home Minister on loopholes in security arrangement in the new parliament building constructed at a cost of Rs 836 crores and opened with so much fanfare by the Prime Minister. We also call upon all democratic-minded people to raise their united voice of protest against such systematic erosion of democratic rules by the BJP government and its misconduct, ” he said.
In an earlier statement he had also strongly opposed exclusion of Chief Justice of India from the Selection Committee of Election Commissioners. He had said, “We strongly oppose the most undemocratic and arbitrary manner in which the BJP-led Central Government sought to get the “Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023” passed in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday 12 December 2023. Hitherto, the search committee for appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners comprised the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition and the Chief Justice of India. But now, the new bill excludes the Chief Justice of India from the selection committee and recommends inclusion of a minister nominated by the Prime Minister in its place. This means the government now arrogates to itself exclusive right to select Election Commissioners as per its own choice and further manipulate in its favour the electoral process which has already suffered severe erosion of its relatively neutral character because of several manipulations over time. This latest move of the central BJP government, therefore. clearly indicates that the Government is hell bent to eradicate whatever vestiges of neutrality the election commission still has. Thus, whatever of the little check and balance was hitherto available in the selection procedure is being abolished now. It is therefore a flagrant violation of rudimentary precepts of democracy and a further step in firming up fascist autocratic rule in the country.”
“We therefore call upon all democratic-minded people to rise up against this sinister move and develop mighty people’s movement throughout the country to compel the BJP Government rescind this fascistic Bill,”he added .
Reacting on the Supreme Court verdict on abrogation of Article 370 of J&K, he said “The Supreme Court verdict of approval to the abrogation of article 370 goes against the commitment made to the people of Kashmir during its accession to the Indian Union. This is injustice to the people of Kashmir”.
