What Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) doing with recovered old weapons from Tehri ?
Dehradun, March 29
What the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) doing with the recovered ancient weapons from Tehri ? This was the question asked by Raju Gusain, a senior journalist from ASI. In June 2017 a huge cache of ancient weapons were discovered during digging for a road project in a remote village in Tehri district of Uttarakhand. But, a RTI reply received from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) indicates that the department has possibly not yet done any study so far on the discovered ancient sword, javelin, dagger, etc.

A road construction work was underway near the Pepola Dhung village (Patti: Dhung Manar) when during digging about 84 ancient swords, javelins, daggers, etc were recovered in June 2017. Even after passage of over seven years, the ASI is yet to start a study on the discovered artificats. The RTI reply received by Raju Gusain from Dehradun reveal, “The ancient sword, javelin, dagger, etc are kept in ASI Dehradun office. No carbon dating done as it is technically not possible conduct on iron weapons and things. No official correspondence made with headquarters. No published final report on the discovered ancient weapons.”
The Pepola Dhung village is waiting for road connectivity since a long time and the work on the 1.2 Km Champatok-Pepola road project was underway in June 2017. After the discovery, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) took control of the discovered weapons. “If the ASI does not conduct any study on found artefacts, why don’t they return it to the villagers? Atleast the villagers will keep them somewhere and people will get a chance to see them,” asked Raju Gusain.
