Success in closing LAA without surgery
Dehradun, August 22
The Cardiology team at Graphic Era Hospital has achieved another significant milestone in the field of advanced cardiac care. The team successfully closed the Left Atrial Appendage (LAA) of a 60-year-old patient without surgery, offering new hope for patients at risk of stroke.
The 60-year-old patient had chronic atrial fibrillation, or an irregular heartbeat, and had suffered two previous strokes. Although he recovered from paralysis after treatment, the risk of another stroke remained. The patient was already on NOAC therapy, yet continued to suffer recurrent strokes. Imaging revealed that the LAA measured 28–30 mm, for which a 33-mm LAA occluder device was used. 3D echocardiography helped the team accurately position the device. A cardiac CT also revealed an old blood clot inside the LAA, making the procedure more challenging.
In this challenging case, Graphic Era Hospital’s cardiology specialists Dr. Raj Pratap Singh, Dr. Himanshu Rana, Dr. Sandeep Malviya and Dr. Ashish Singh, with the support of cardiac anaesthesia specialists Dr. S. P. Gautam and Dr. Parag, successfully closed the LAA without surgery. The procedure was completed successfully without any surgical intervention. The patient was able to walk within 24 hours and is recovering well.
This achievement reflects Graphic Era Hospital’s growing expertise and strengthening healthcare services in the field of advanced treatment for complex cardiac conditions in Uttarakhand. The procedure offers a new treatment option for patients who have suffered recurrent strokes or are unable to take anticoagulant medicines.
