An alternate road to Pithoragarh from Tanakpur National Highway has been proposed as Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has given approval for the Jakhpuran to Rameshwar motor road which would run parallel to the Pithoragarh-Tanakpur National Highway, claimed Didihat MLA and senior BJP leader Bishan Singh Chuphal.

Addressing a press conference here, Chuphal said that the Chief Minister has also given approval for the construction of a bridge on river Ramagnga.”Some part of the road has already been cut, but the Chief Minister has approved it to be constructed on the lines of all weather road,” said Chuphal.

The BJP leader said that after construction of this alternate road to Tanakpur from Pithoragarh, the people of this border district will not have to depend on NH 9, that frequently gets closed during monsoon season.”This year, the rate of closure of this road was highest compared to past three years of its commissioning as all weather road,” said the BJP leader.

According to District Disaster Management Office (DDMO) officials in Pithoragarh and Champawat, the road remained closed on 300 occasions in last three years due to which people of Pithoragarh, Champawat and neighbouring Nepali districts of Baitari and Darchula had to face severe inconveniences as the road remain the lifeline  for people in the area.

According to NH division of state PWD, the road could only be landslide free after 51 landslides sensitive points on the road are treated.” The work of treating the sensitive landslides zoned could he completed after our DPR on the work gets approval from Ministry of Road Transport, Government of India,” said Sunil Kumar, Executive Engineer and incharge of NH 9.
