Avoid Nicotine products for Cardiovascular health: Dr Sushil

Jammu, May 31

To commemorate World No Tobacco Day and raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco on cardiovascular health, Head Department of Cardiology GMCH Jammu Dr Sushil Sharma held a day long cardiac awareness cum health check up camp at Vishwakarma Sabha, Bakshi Nagar Jammu. The program aimed to enhance awareness regarding the harmful effects of tobacco and substance abuse, with particular emphasis on their role in the development of heart and vascular diseases.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sushil Sharma described tobacco as one of the leading preventable causes of disease and premature death worldwide. Global health agencies attribute different statistics to tobacco, with the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) reporting that smoking and tobacco use account for roughly7.7million global deaths annually The World health organization (WHO) estimates an even higher toll, with tobacco contributing to over 8 Millions death yearly, or about 1 in 10 adults deaths worldwide. Smoking is associated with a 30% higher risk of coronary artery disease and a 20–30% increased risk of stroke. He explained that smoking damages the inner lining of blood vessels, promotes the formation of fatty plaques, and increases the risk of coronary artery disease, heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral vascular disease. He further stated that tobacco use accelerates blood clot formation and chronic inflammation, significantly increasing the likelihood of life-threatening cardiovascular emergencies.

Dr. Sushil highlighted that smoking not only contributes to coronary artery disease but also causes hypertension and cardiac arrhythmias by raising blood pressure and disturbing the heart’s electrical activity. He expressed concern over the growing use of cigarettes, chewing tobacco, vaping products, and e-cigarettes among young people, cautioning that these products are far from harmless and can adversely affect cardiovascular health. He stressed that preventing tobacco addiction among youth is essential for reducing the future burden of heart disease.

Emphasizing the importance of tobacco control, Dr. Sushil called for stronger public awareness campaigns, school-based education, smoking cessation support, and community participation. He noted that the benefits of quitting tobacco begin almost immediately, with improvements in oxygen levels, blood pressure, circulation, and overall cardiovascular function.

In his concluding remarks, Dr Sushil Sharma asserted that tobacco is a silent killer and remains one of the greatest threats to cardiovascular health worldwide. Its harmful chemicals damage blood vessels, increase blood pressure, promote clot formation, and accelerate the development of heart disease and stroke. Observing World No Tobacco Day on 31st May reminds us that preventing tobacco use and encouraging cessation can save millions of lives.
